Welcome to the Skills for Life Network E-News Update
The Ofsted annual report for 2008/09 has now been published, with some interesting points of note around Skills for Life provision. See below for more details.
We've added to the article on the recently published Government White Paper: 'Skills for Growth - the National Skills Strategy'. You'll now find this contains a link to a Brief Guide to the Skills Investment Strategy. Brain Games is a new software engine, developed by LSIS, which gives learners a quick and easy way to practise their literacy and numeracy skills
My Story update
Since it launched on The One Show, people across the UK have been sending in their stories to the BBC My Story competition. Fifteen stories will feature in a major five part TV series. Five people will win a major book deal with Harper Collins, AND a cash advance of £20,000. The competition closes on 16 December, so there’s still plenty of time to get those entries in!
Ofsted annual report for 2008/09 published
The report concludes that developing the core skills of literacy and numeracy remains a relatively weak area of Skills for Employment provision. Barriers include shortages of staff in work-based learning providers who are qualified in Skills for Life training, and a reluctance among employers to tackle basic skills issues.

The Government White Paper: 'Skills for Growth - the National Skills Strategy', published on the 11th November, marks a radical shift in some of the priorities of the current skills system
