Welcome to the Skills for life Network E-News Update

Seasons Greetings everyone!

Functional skills are very much on the agenda for 2010. If you'd like to get up to speed on functional skills, you may like to attend one of the regional network events being held in March 2010. Network events, run by the Functional Skills Support Programme, provide practitioners and managers with the latest information on functional skills, along with an opportunity for networking and planning. Find out more below.

This has been a busy year for Skills for Life Network! For the numeracy specialists among you, we have some statistics:

  • 10,000+ Skills for Life/Functional Skills professionals are now subscribed to the fortnightly e-news update
  • on average, 30 new members join us each week
  • we welcome 15,000+ unique visitors to the website every month

Literacy specialists may be interested to know that our most popular article, 'Practice National Adult Literacy and Numeracy Tests', has been read by over 14,000 people this year. ESOL specialists may like to ponder that we now have members from 83 countries, speaking 33 languages!

Functional Skills Support Programme Regional Network Events and Training
The Functional Skills Support Programme for the post-16 sector is running a series of regional network events in March 2010. Network events provide practitioners and managers with the latest information on functional skills.

Is your workplace ready for the Six Book Challenge?
The Campaign for Learning and The Reading Agency are inviting companies to take up the Six Book Challenge as part of their Learning at Work Day celebrations, and to be in with a chance of winning a visit from a top author

My Story competition update - deadline extended!
The My Story deadline has now been extended to midnight on the 6th January 2010, so everyone has a little more time to finish off their stories over Christmas and still be in with a chance of winning a prize

New resources from the Adult Basic Skills Resource Centre
Topical, seasonal resources include: 12 Days of Christmas algebra, 45 Christmas Maths questions, Silent Night, Christmas Star template, Xmas Literacy quizzes, Jingle Bells, Santa's problems and How to Make a Christmas Star. Check them out with your learners!

Ofqual publish functional skills criteria
Following a consultation held over the summer by QCDA, Ofqual have now published the regulatory criteria for the non-pilot functional skills qualifications. Awarding organisations will now use the criteria to develop their qualifications for accreditation in spring 2010.

The Pre-Budget Report: Further Education, Skills and the Economy
Schools and health funding will receive guaranteed increases, but the Government intends to make £300 million in efficiency savings from ‘reducing funding not directly supporting learner participation and lower priority adult skills budgets, increasing co-funding of training, and further efficiencies in the delivery of learning to focus spending on those people that need it most and on the skills most vital to Britain’s future’
