Welcome to the Skills for Life Network E-News Update

We had expected a 'quiet' e-news update as we head towards the summer holidays, but instead we have a very busy edition, with a series of news items on a range of key developments around funding, strategy, initial teacher training grants and functional skills. You'll find all the news items below, but a couple of key points are:

Key Skills in Apprenticeship Frameworks will be extended until March 2011 to allow providers the choice of offering either Functional Skills or Key Skills in the interim. This is a temporary measure - see below for more information.

Major changes have been announced with regards to the funding of 16 -19 provision. FE Colleges, sixth form colleges and other training providers will be paid direct from the Young People's Learning Agency (YPLA) from August, with local authorities maintaining a strategic role in 16 -19 education. Consultations on FE Skills Strategy and on Skills Funding
Skills Minister John Hayes has announced two consultations: 'Skills for Sustainable Growth' outlines BIS’ vision for skills and seeks further views, and 'A Simplified Further Education and Skills Funding System and Methodology' seeks views on simplifying the funding system.

Initial Teacher Training Grant
A non means tested Fee Grant of £400 will be available in 2010/11 to support those teachers, tutors and trainers commencing Diploma level Initial Teacher training qualifications on a Part Time basis from September 2010

John Hayes announces review of offender learning
John Hayes, minister for further education and skills, has announced a review of learning for offenders in prisons and in the community. The government’s review has been designed to complement the autumn consultation announced last month by Justice Secretary Kenneth Clarke, into reforming the justice system.

Maths4Us
Maths4Us is a joint initiative between unionlearn, NIACE and the National Centre for Excellence in the Teaching of Mathematics (NCETM) that aims to encourage people to tackle numeracy, take-up numeracy learning and have fun with maths

Online basics is a free, easy to use course that aims to help people get started using computers and the internet

The Work Programme consultation
The Department for Work and Pensions has launched a discussion forum seeking views on a number of themes for reform of the welfare to work system and the implementation of The Work Programme. The first theme is inviting comments on capital raising and payment models and is available for comment until 30 July 2010.
