Welcome to the Skills for Life Network E-News Update

You'll see that The Department for Business, Innovation and Skills (BIS) has released information on the future content and arrangements for English and Maths Qualifications for adults for the academic year 2012/13 and beyond. The focus will be on the core English and mathematical skills needed to enable learners to progress towards achieving an A*- C GCSE or a Level 2 Functional English and Maths qualification. Ofqual has confirmed that the operational end-dates of the Skills for Life and Key Skills qualifications mean that no new enrolments will be taken beyond August. We also have news of bursaries funding for trainee Further Education teachers, and on funding for English Language training for speakers of other languages.

£10 million for English language support
Communities Minister, Andrew Stunell has announced that the Department for Communities and Local Government will make available up to £10 million in funding to support English language training for speakers of other languages.

ESF Community Learning Grants To Re-Open in North West

Independent review of professionalism in the FE and skills sector
Minister for further education, skills and lifelong learning, John Hayes, has launched an independent review to investigate ‘ways to improve the professional status of the further education and skills workforce’.

John Hayes confirms bursaries funding for trainee Further Education teachers
Skills Minister John Hayes has set out the funding available to those undertaking initial teacher education to teach in the FE and Skills sector. For 2012 – 13, bursaries of £1,000 will be introduced to enable up to 10,000 trainees to take either the Diploma in Teaching in the Lifelong Learning Sector (DTLLS), or a PGCE qualification. In addition, bursaries of £1,500 will be introduced to enable up to 1,000 trainees who are taking HEI-accredited ITE courses and who are intending to teach basic Maths and English in the sector.

New Numeracy Campaign
National Numeracy is a new, independent organisation, that aims to transform attitudes and achievement in numeracy across the age range. In particular it focuses on those with low levels of numeracy.

Progress on adult literacy and numeracy in Wales
English literacy skills in Wales have seen a marked improvement since 2004 and numeracy skills have also increased, although by a smaller margin. Welsh literacy levels experienced a slight fall during the same period. These were the headline findings of a survey of adult literacy and numeracy skills in Wales which has been published by the Welsh Government.
