2011 Skills for Life survey
The survey – which examined the maths, English and Information and Communication Technology (ICT) levels of 16-65 year olds across England – found that in some areas, around a quarter of adults have the numeracy skills of a seven to nine year old or below. In Yorkshire and the Humber, the West Midlands and the South East, there was a boost in literacy skills.

English and maths in the Qualifications and Credit Framework - a funding update
From January 2013 the Skills Funding Agency will approve for funding all accredited QCF English and maths qualifications across the Adult Skills Budget (including Awards at level 2). They will also fund units within the Rules of Combination of these QCF English and maths qualifications.

FE sector’s views on teacher training qualifications released
The findings report from Phase Two of the review of further education teacher and training qualifications has been released. The report summarises over 350 responses from members of the FE and Skills sector, with the majority of respondents supporting the proposals to simplify the existing system of initial teacher training qualifications, including those for teachers of English, literacy, English Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL), mathematics, and those teaching disabled learners.

New programme to get young people ready for work
The new Traineeships programme, which could be in place by September 2013, would provide young people aged 16 to 24 with a tailor-made package of support, including help with English and maths for those who have not achieved a GCSE grade C or equivalent or better.
