Funded by BIS, TechDis Jess and Jack are high-quality, youthful, modern, natural sounding synthetic voices for use with text-to-speech (TTS) tools. These are ideal for people with print impairments, such as dyslexia, but just about everyone can benefit in some way.

Free TechDis Toolbox
Funded by BIS, this collection of resources gives useful hints and tips to help individuals use technology more effectively. While written primarily for learners with disabilities or difficulties, it is useful for anyone who wants to improve their skills.

New £6m fund for English language learning
The Department for Communities and Local Government has launched a £6m fund to support innovative and creative ways to teach English, helping people integrate into society and improve interaction within their communities.

New guidance from Ofsted for FE and skills providers
This guidance sets out Ofsted’s approach to supporting and challenging further education and skills providers that are judged to require improvement as set out in the Common Inspection Framework for further education and skills 2012. This guidance takes effect from January 2013.

Skilled to go is moving to Citizens Advice
Skilled to go is a free online resource for teachers and education professionals. It uses real life consumer situations, such as choosing a mobile phone, to help learners develop consumer skills, knowledge and confidence alongside literacy and numeracy skills. From 1st April 2013 the resources will be held on the Citizens Advice website.

Support for staff working with offenders to develop their speaking and listening skills
This pack from LSIS includes ideas, activities and information to help raise awareness of the importance of speaking and listening skills and support to employ these skills effectively within their context. It also provides strategies to support the important area of literacy skills development with offenders.

Watchdog Daily clips now available online
The Skillswise website now has several clips from the BBC consumer affairs show Watchdog Daily. The clips offer advice and useful tips on how to brush up your maths and English skills to get a better deal.
