In this edition of the update, we have more information on the reform of functional skills qualifications. The intention is for the new qualifications to be available from 2018.

Skills for Life Diagnostic Assessment Materials
This set of diagnostic assessment materials for literacy, language and numeracy (Entry 1 to Level 2) was a national development in 2002. Included are materials for assessing learners on the pre-entry curriculum framework (Milestones 4-8) and materials for assessing the need for support for dyslexia.

New pilots to tackle Britain's life skills shortfalls
Thirteen Citizens' Curriculum pilots testing new ways of improving people's key life skills have launched. NIACE's Citizens' Curriculum is a programme of study approach that provides support tailored to the needs of individuals, in ways co-designed by them.

Quick Reads Survey
Quick Reads celebrates 10 years next year. NIACE has been commissioned by the Reading Agency to assess the impact Quick Reads has made. They are interested in how Quick Reads have been used to increase literacy levels and encourage reading for pleasure.

Reforming Maths and English Functional Skills Qualifications
The Education and Training Foundation is aiming to reform functional skills qualifications so that they are rigorous, challenging and well taught. A revised set of National Standards for Adult Literacy and Numeracy will also be developed, along with new core curricula and an updated Access for All.
